JusJoJan

As it is a New Year and I have been erratic with my blogging, I have decided to start the year by joining in the JusJoJan challenge – Just Jot it January. Linda gives us the daily prompt

Today’s prompt is ‘train’.

The word train has featured quite a bit in my life. I remember my mother saying that it was her duty to train her children. She needed to train us to have good manners, be obedient, and master certain skills. Strangely enough, I also remember her telling me that she had to train my hair to grow a certain way. Well, in training us to be well-behaved and become law-abiding citizens she certainly was successful but as far as training my hair was concerned – total failure there!

When I left school, I went to a college to train as a teacher. That was the best decision I ever made in my life and I believed I was trained very well.

Another part of my life where the word train featured was where it refers to a mode of transport. Oh yes – I rode a train throughout my childhood. In the days of my youth and in the part of the country where I lived riding a suburban train was the best mode of transport. I seldom rode on a bus and when I did it was a huge novelty and quite an adventure. I knew the names of all the stations from Fish Hoek where I lived to Simonstown and back to Fish Hoek and then all the way to Cape Town. I rode that train on my own from a very early age. I was seven when I knew how to look up the train timetable, which platform to wait on, how to purchase my ticket and where to get off. In those days it was perfectly normal and safe for a small child to travel unaccompanied by an adult on the suburban train. I would take the train to visit my grandmother – a half-hour journey, to go to the movies – a 15-minute journey and to go to my swimming lessons – a 10-minute journey. My friend and I also travelled on our own all the way to the city for her orthodontic appointments when we were just nine years old! Then for my last two years of school, I went to school in the city – an hour’s journey – and travelled by train to get there and back. What a great way to travel. These days the suburban train service is not as reliable as it was back in the sixties and seventies and crime has been a problem too. Things are in place now to rectify this but one would certainly not allow a small child to travel unaccompanied on a train.

When I went away to college the mode of transport to get there was an overnight train. In fact, the train took two nights. Sometimes this journey would involve changing at a place called De Aar in the middle of the Karoo. Four times a year there and back I would take this train and oh what fun it was! There were, of course, other students riding the train and travelling Second Class you would share a compartment with five others, the bunks being top, middle and bottom on each side! In the compartment was a single wash basin which we all shared. The loo and shower were a short walk down the corridor. Some of us would pay a little extra to get bedding while others would bring a sleeping bag. If you got bedding a steward would make up your bed for you each night.

There was also a dining car and the food served there was not bad at all. Of course, as we were poor students we would choose the cheapest items on the menu.

The last time I slept on a train was in 1973. The last time I rode the suburban train was in 2004 when I took my grandsons on a train just for the fun of it! They were six and seven years old and had never been on a train in their lives. The look on their faces when the train rumbled into the station was priceless. And they loved it! The next time they went on a train was in their teens and we had to carefully explain how to use the train timetable, how to buy a ticket, which platform to wait on etc.

Of course, when I travel abroad I use public transport and find it totally awesome. The freedom to just hop on a subway train or a bus and get to your destination without worrying about traffic is beyond amazing.

Recently I hosted two young German tourists who had been travelling through Africa. They used public transport in every country but in South Africa, they hired a car because our public transport system is so unreliable. Oh if only our trains ran like they did in the sixties – how awesome that would be!

Christmas Share Your World

Here is my contribution to this week’s special SYW challenge from pensitivity101

Message from Di:-

Welcome to a special Share your World.

It’s Christmas Day and many readers will be celebrating with friends and family. However, some of my readers don’t celebrate this Christian holiday, so this week, I am Sharing My World and asking you to share your day.

What will you be eating today?
We are celebrating with our three daughters and two of our grandsons. Everybody contributed to the preparation of our Christmas lunch. We had Gammon, Leg of lamb, roast sweet potato and veggies, tzatziki and for dessert Malva Pudding and custard. It was all delicious.

2. What was your favourite gift?
Soon after arriving to spend the holidays with our kids, we did a challenging hike. My son-in-law was concerned that I was wearing a rather inadequate pair of sneakers. It turned out that he was my Secret Santa and that gave him a great idea – Get Gran some decent hiking shoes! Best gift ever!

3. What is the worst bit, if any, about celebrating (Christmas or otherwise)
We were expecting rain on Christmas day but it did not arrive until today so nothing spoiled the day for us at all.

4. Do your pets get to join in with the fun?
The dog, Lucy, was delighted to receive lots of bones and leftovers. Grandpa shared his biltong with the cat.

Gratitude:
I am so grateful that we can enjoy time with our family not only at Christmas time but often during the year too. I am also grateful that I have had the privilege of watching my grandchildren grow up.

Christmas Present in Plettenberg Bay

Every year at Christmas we holiday with our immediate family – our three daughters, son-in-law and four grandchildren. Since our granddaughter has been dating the young man she is about to marry we have had to share her with his family and this year it was their turn to be with them. Our oldest grandson is now living and working in Hungary so we missed him being with us too. Over the years Christmas has changed for us many times and we must now accept that with the grandchildren all grown up it will change again. But how amazing that we have all the memories and photographs of Christmas Past and Christmas Present and we will make new memories with Christmas Future.

Christmas Past – Reading the Grinch who tried to steal Christmas to the Grandchildren –
Clockwise from back – Shannon, Jay, Joshua, Granny, Simon, Grandpa
Christmas Past Kokstad 2016 Allan, Earl, Lisa, Laurie, Lauren, Simon, Shannon, Jay, Helen, Joshua
Christmas Present – Lauren, Laurie, Allan, Grandpa, Joshua, Lisa
Simon always plays Santa and hands out the gifts
Simon showing off his Secret Santa gift
Granny reading her Secret Santa message

By the style of the writing in my Christmas card, I guessed that it was from Allan. I was correct and on the back of the card in tiny type it said – Made specially for you by your son-in-law. He then told me to look at my WhatsApp – A photo of a pair of good hiking shoes!

“Check your WhatsApp Gran”

We are all together with Lauren, Allan and Simon in Plettenberg Bay and the days have been mostly sunny and warm. Most mornings the fit ones amongst us get up early and walk on the beach before breakfast.

Simon, Allan, Lauren

We have also done the Robberg Hike which is, to say the least, quite a challenge! I have done it several times in the past and I’m proud to say I managed it again this year!

Robberg Hike – Lauren and Allan
Robberg Hike – Me – SIL thought my shoes were not good enough – hence the promised Secret Santa gift!
Robberg Hike – The Afrikaans word for seal is rob. Robberg means Seal Mountain. Here we are looking down on a rookery of seals
What a wonderful life!

Lauren and Allan’s home is in a gated estate that has some beautiful, marked trails which we walk most afternoons.

The trails also have fitness circuits
There is also a lovely play park for kids
Lollz and Josh still think they’re kids

Plettenberg Bay has an awesome climate and the most beautiful, white, sandy beaches.  Robberg Beach is the perfect place for enjoying walks, swims, dog walking and sundowners.

Allan, Simon, Josh and some friendly dogs having fun

On Christmas Eve we all went to a lovely restaurant called Barringtons for breakfast. This place has a fabulous herb and vegetable garden and the sunflowers are spectacular.

Today the weather has turned chilly and we have had some rain – most unusual for Plettenberg Bay at this time of the year. So we are all chilling indoors, bonding, reading, watching movies, cuddling the pets etc.

Tomorrow Lauren, Allan and Si are off to join friends on the Wild Coast for a few days and we are going to pet-sit.

I hope you have all had an amazing festive season.

Here are my answers to this week’s SYW from pensitivity101

1.  Do you watch and enjoy reality TV shows?

I have caught a few but I don’t really enjoy them. My hubby likes Survivor but I find it quite boring. And please don’t make me watch The Batchelor or Love Island!

2.  If you had the power, where would you send anyone you didn’t like?

I would condemn the contemptible narcissists that I know to an island surrounded by sharks with no means of escape. Only other narcissists would occupy this island so they would be unable to be in coercive control of another person again.

No narcissist will get this!

3.  Do you enjoy your own company and what do you do with your ‘Me Time’?

Yes, I really do enjoy my own company. It is wonderful not having to think about the needs of another person for a while. I enjoy walking on my own with my earphones in so that I can listen to a podcast or audiobook. On the rare occasion that I am home alone, I get stuck into projects knowing that I won’t be disturbed.

But, of course, I do enjoy the company of friends and family too. And I am most grateful that I am happy to be with my hubby 24/7 most of the time.

4.  If you wanted to change anything about your partner/pet/family what would it be?

I don’t really want to change anything about the people in my life. They are who they are and I love them unconditionally. That’s not to say that they’re perfect and there certainly are things that annoy me from time to time. But if I want to change them then they would certainly want to change me and I’m not having that!

Gratitude:

I am grateful that I have plenty of people to laugh with especially my grandkids who always give me something to laugh about.

Here are my answers to this week’s questions from pensiivity101

1. What is your idea of a good holiday? Seeing the sights, lazing on a beach, hitting the night spots, getting away from it all……………….

Definitely getting away from it all. I have lived next to the sea all my life and beaches have played a big part in my life but these days I cannot lie in the sun for more than half an hour. Living where I do is like being on holiday all the time but it gets busy during the summer season and then we go away – to another busy seaside place but it’s bigger so you don’t really notice the crowds!

My best kind of holiday is in the South African bush at a game reserve. Getting close to nature really does it for me.

2. You are offered tickets to a show. Which would you prefer, Opera, Play, Cinema, Entertainment, Ice Gala, or something else?

I so rarely get to go to live shows so I would love to go to a play. Even the recent school production I attended recently was a treat!

3. Have you ever won a sports trophy (or something similar for a particular achievement)

I have not. But I did get a fake gold medal from my principal when I retired from teaching.

4. What is your dream car (fact or fictional)

Fact:- This may sound boring to some but I miss my dream car – a Volkswagen Caravelle which I drove for 10 years. This vehicle took us on the most amazing adventures and the whole extended family could travel in it in the greatest comfort. It was also easy to drive and easy to park.

Me at the wheel of the Caravelle when it was brand new in 2005

Fiction: A self-driving car might be nice. It would have to take me anywhere I wanted simply by obeying my voice command and it must be quick so it would have to fly as well.

Gratitude:
Knowing you’re loved is priceless.

The greatest gift of course is love. I am grateful to have been with the love of my life for 40 years.

Share Your World – Monday 13 November 2023

This week pensitivy101 asks the following questions.

1.  If you can, how often do you exercise every week?

I have had a break from regular exercise recently. My excuses include – a foot injury, too wet to walk, too windy to walk, too cold to walk, and at my age why should I! But the time for excuses is over. My foot is better and the weather has improved. I just have to get myself motivated and return to walking an hour a day every day! And when the weather is awful, I have an aerobics video that I can do. NO MORE EXCUSES!

2.  Do you belong, or have you ever belonged, to a gym?

Yes, I belonged to a gym for many years – and I did go regularly.

3.  Do you prefer to exercise alone or in a group (ie. aerobics)

Before I joined a gym with a variety of treadmills and other exercise machines, I used to go to aerobic classes. After that, I exercised on my own at the gym. I also for many years had a running partner but sometimes our schedules did not allow for us to run together so I would run with my dog or alone. When we moved to Struisbaai and there was no gym I followed a program at home that I’d done with a personal trainer. I don’t do that anymore. Instead, I do a bit of yoga and I walk, usually on my own.

4.  Do you enjoy it or feel it’s something you ought to do?

Both. I feel it is important to exercise and I certainly enjoy it once I’m in the routine of it. When I was younger I would go out for a run regardless of the weather but now that I’m older I don’t feel that strongly about it!

Gratitude

I love the above meme and I am grateful that I am in good health and can indeed live in the moment and enjoy what each day brings.

Share Your World Monday 6 November 2022

This week’s challenge is in memory of Melanie (Sparks from a Combustible Mind) who used to host SYW. It was the last challenge she posted before Di (pensitivity101) took over in August 2022. Sadly Melanie died a year ago and Di has asked us to answer these questions in her memory. My answers are similar to those answered on 1 August 2022.

Do you ever feel more excited about getting the package in the mail, rather than the item that’s in it?

Receiving anything in the mail is a rare and exciting event in my neck of the woods. There is no postal service anywhere near us and so we rely on courier services.

Not often seen in South Africa!

The courier who delivers my orders from afar also gets a very warm welcome when he rings my doorbell.

The courier – my favourite guy!

What is the difference between your ideal self and your real self?  (i.e. what attribute or physical feature would allow you feel the ideal ‘you’?)

The difference between my ideal self and the real me is enormous. I am always somewhat surprised to look in the mirror and see an old lady instead of a gorgeous young girl with bouncy blond hair, sparkly eyes and clear unblemished skin! Sigh – the hair is dry and grey, the eyes dull green and the skin all wrinkly and marked with age spots. At school one day, one of the kiddies in my class asked me how old I was. When I answered that I was 21, he said, “My aunty is 21 and she doesn’t have crinkles!” To be honest, I have never looked in the mirror and seen the perfect me because she has never existed. So losing my looks has not been too much of a disappointment. I actually prefer my older self to my younger one. The striving to be perfect is over – now what you see is what you get – take it or leave it!

If you found $2,000 on the ground and there were no witnesses, what would you do with it?

Here is what I answered last year “I would certainly try to find the owner. Firstly, I would report my find to the police station and give my details. I would not hand the cash over. I am pretty confident that most of the officers at our local station are honest but one can never be too sure! Secondly, I would advertise on the group page that most residents of my town subscribe to. The one who can tell me how much I picked up will get it. If nobody comes to collect it then I’ll know I’m meant to keep it!

Well, recently I actually had an experience like this. I found R800 lying on the floor in a shop. Somebody had clearly dropped it. It was a coffee/gift shop. I asked everybody around if they’d dropped the cash. Nobody had. So I gave it to the cashier and told her that if nobody came to claim it she was to share it with the other members of staff. I never found out whether it was claimed or not. So you never know what you will do until it actually happens to you.

Are you ever morally obliged to take action? Under what circumstances?

I pretty much believe that we should live and let live but there are certain times when as responsible citizens we should take action. We would all certainly report criminal activity that we see but do we pay attention to the clues of domestic abuse or pedophilia? If we do we should certainly take action.

When travelling in game reserves I become quite annoyed if I see people feeding the wildlife. I don’t hesitate to explain to them that this is signing the animal’s death warrant. Most of them are ignorant of the rules and grateful to learn that their ‘kindness’ is actually wrong. Others show me what their middle finger looks like.

GRATITUDE SECTION
Please feel free to share how last week went for you.   Bright or not-so-bright spots?

For the eight years that I have lived in my current home, I have done without a dishwasher. I didn’t really miss it but because we often let out our home we decided to install one next to the washing machine in the laundry room. Oh wow – what a difference it has made to my life, especially after a dinner party! My kitchen is cleaned up in minutes and the next morning my dishes are cleaner than I can get them no matter how much I scour them.

I am grateful that a recent let paid for this new appliance!

Here are my answers to this week’s Share Your World from pensitiity101

Although Halloween is about to happen soon, this week’s questions are not on that topic. Thanks Di!

I have taken the liberty to dedicate the gratitude section to the Springboks!

  1. Do you have carpets, rugs, laminating flooring, tiles, or wooden floors (or something else) in your property

We have ‘fake’ laminate flooring in most of the rooms but ‘real’ laminate flooring in our bedroom. The reason we chose vinyl is because it is waterproof and the main areas are open-plan to the kitchen. Also being a beach house, wet feet are often traipsing through. The bathrooms are tiled.

‘Fake laminate floors’
Tiles in the bathroom

We don’t have any carpets at all.

Do you have a bathtub and separate shower, or a combination of the two?

We have a full bathroom with loo, basin, bath tub, and shower cubicle.

Our second bathroom has a basin and shower. The loo is separate.

What is your favourite room in the house, and why?

I enjoy our dining/braai room which has an indoor braai/barbeque. It is one of the later extensions to our home and I just appreciate the difference it has made to our comfort , and how easy it has made entertaining friends and family.

Our Braai Room

We have an enclosed stoop extending from the lounge area which is lovely and sunny and I spend a lot of time reading there in winter. In summer it is a lovely place to sit and watch the garden birds that visit frequently. It has a sliding door which is always open during the warmer weather allowing lovely airflow through the house. The lounge is where we spend most of our time and is set up so that we have a lovely workstation for both our computers, and the seating area has a wood-burning stove which is so cozy during winter.

Seating area and beyond it the sunny stoop section. In the next photo, you will see the workstation and television

How many televisions do you have?

We have a big-screen LG television set in the lounge. I often connect my laptop to it so that I can show my photographs and PowerPoint presentations to better advantage.

Big Screen TV can be seen from the kitchen too.

We also have a smart TV in our bedroom.

TV is attached to the top of a cupboard with the connections inside the cupboard.

I am really grateful for my lovely, functional home. We travel a lot and sometimes let our home out on Air B&B.

Gratitude:
We don’t act our age, we act our shoe size.

On Saturday night we certainly did not act our age. We joined eight others at our friends’ home, enjoyed a good South African Braai and then watched the 2023 Rugby World Cup on television.

Earlier in the day while out doing shopping and other chores we noticed that absolutely everybody was dressed in Springbok colours including our Coffee Shop friend and the staff at our local supermarket.

Staff at OK Grocer getting into Rugby Mood
Our favourite Coffee Shop Owner dressed to win

At our gathering, we all dressed up too. The Earl received Springbok colours for fishing in 1971 and still has his green blazer and tie so he wore those! I donned green jeans, a a green top and tied a South African strap around my waist. My bag was in SA colours too!

Proudly sporting his Springbok colours as he prepares to support the Bokke
Go Bokke!

The game was nail-bitingly tense as the Bokke defended their title against the awesomely strong All Blacks. We shrieked and yelled at the screen as if our boys could hear us and maybe they could because I swear the whole country was supporting them as well as every ex-pat all over the world. My brother in England certainly was and I was texting the score to my friend in Tenerife!

This friend takes supporting the team very seriously!
Sonz having a tense moment!

It was close! It was seriously close! The All Blacks gave their all and scored the only try of the match. If they’d been successful in converting it they would have won. But the Boks defended to the bitter end and won by a hair – 12-11. They did it again and WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

Cheers went up, cars hooted and the entire country went into a state of euphoria. What a lovely feeling it is to win! All gratitude goes to our awesome Springboks for bringing the trophy home for the fourth time!

Here are my answers to this week’s SYW challenge from Pensitivity101

When shopping, do you prefer to shop online or in person?

Where I live, I don’t have a choice. There is no online food shopping available – yet! I am sure it will be an option soon, as this town is growing at an alarming rate.

I do make use of Take-a-Lot for other kinds of shopping. Delivery is usually within three days of the order.

Do you take/stick to a shopping list?

Yes, I usually take a shopping list but I also like to browse and might buy something that I’d forgotten to add to the list. I am lucky in that my hubby often shops alone. I give him a list but invariably he comes home with more than what was on it – eg chocolate which he insists is for me!

Do you shop around or are you store-loyal for convenience?

We only have one major supermarket, OK Grocer, in my town. This used to be an inadequate little shop but it has moved to our new mall and it is now quite impressive.

If we want to go somewhere else it’s a 30km drive to Bredasdorp. This we do once in a while. We used to prefer Checkers but now I have discovered that Spar has more sugar-free products – rusks, jelly, crackers etc.

Roughly how long does it take you to do a weekly shop

I would say we don’t spend more than an hour in the supermarket but when we go to Bredasdorp to do various other chores, we might take two to three hours. This will include breakfast at a restaurant.

Gratitude
Sometimes, Time is something we need to gift to ourselves.

Happily, I can say that finally after a busy and fulfilling career and raising two families, I have plenty of time for myself As much as I loved my life before retirement I did feel that I had to split myself into many pieces so that everybody got a little bit. Yes, I did take Me-Time – but now I don’t even have to think about scheduling that in. And I can honestly say that I did not experience empty nest syndrome at all. Perhaps, it’s because we moved away and started our retirement as a new adventure. Eight years later and it’s still an adventure in spite of the usual trials of growing older. Of course, we still see our kids and grandkids often but we’re happy they have their own lives and we have ours.

Here are my answers to this week’s challenge from Di

Do you prefer a duvet, quilt or sheets and blankets on your bed?

I have a down duvet on my bed. In the winter I top that with a blanket. Making a bed with a duvet is easy. Changing the linen is a different story!

Do you sleep with one or two pillows?

Two. But only one under my head. One is goose down, and the other is a sort of memory foam that is not too puffy. I have six in my home and want to replace them but I can’t find that exact type. Instead, I have covered them with pillow protectors. They are the most comfortable pillows ever! The shop I got them from no longer exists and there is no brand name on the pillow so I can’t even order them online.

Do you prefer a single, double, or king-size bed?

I have a queen-sized double bed. This past weekend we stayed in a B&B and requested a double bed expecting it to be a queen but it was tiny! However, we were perfectly comfortable – well I was!

In the winter, do you have a hot water bottle or an electric blanket?

I have an electric under blanket which I switch on for about half an hour before going to sleep.

Fun question: have you ever slept in a hammock?

I think a hammock is the most comfortable thing once you’ve managed to get into it. I have never owned one and never actually slept in one. I would imagine it would be fine for a nap.

Gratitude:
Enjoy what you have, it may be all you need.

When we moved from Cape Town I thought I would not be able to live without Woolworths. (South African chain store that supplies a variety of items including homeware, fashion, food etc. Their quality is superior to any other store in the country!) But guess what? I survive and I only miss them a tiny bit.

I didn’t want a Nespresso Coffee Machine but received one for my 70th birthday from my kids and now I love it!

But seriously it is true how we grow if we let life take us on our destined journey and learn to love every step of the way.
